Abstract

Offshore structures are used worldwide for a variety of functions and in a variety of water depths and environmental conditions. The right selection of the types of platforms and method of installation is very important to function safely for their design lifetimes. Offshore construction is the installation of structures and facilities in a marine environment, usually for the production and transmission of electricity, oil, gas and other resources Offshore platforms are giant structures used for the purpose of drilling, extracting and producing of gas and oil from wells, located deep beneath the ocean floors. These platforms have onsite processing and storage facilities, as well as provide accommodation for the crew. Offshore platforms are strongly built and are designed to last decades in the harsh environment. Depending on the requirements, they can either be floating or fixed to the ocean floor. There are different types of platforms that can be operated in a wide range of water depths from 200 to 12,000 ft. Over the past century, many advances have been made in the development of offshore technology, including the foundations of the structures that support the working platforms. There are currently, several potential foundation solutions for any given offshore site conditions. The circumstances of a particular site may be either fair or harsh depending on: the weather conditions such as wind, currents and waves; or the local conditions such as the water-depth, seabed geotechnical quality and topography, among other particular circumstances. The purpose of this report is to provide a general overview of the classifications, characteristics and fundamentals behind all types of offshore structures that can be either fixed platforms that stand above the water and are directly fixed to the seabed or floating platforms that are fixed to the seabed by means of mooring systems. Provides us with a description about the most common types of foundation structures used in the offshore industry. This report focuses on two types of classifications which are function & configuration. It gives a brief description about each category with an overview of each type under these categories, their specification, advantages, and disadvantages It highlights the importance of foundation in offshore applications, presents the most common types of offshore foundation with a brief description about each type, their specification, transportation and installation methods and the selection of different types of offshore structure making connections between the suitable foundations Tortne appropriate platforms. It explains the following phases of installation process: loadout, sea fastening, transportation and installation. with a definition and details about each phase, the loading out and transporting of the various components of the platform to the installation Site, positioning the platform on the site and assembling the various components into a stable structure in accordance with the design drawings and specifications, it also covers and explains the main types of platform installation methods with an overview of each method, linking them to the suitable offshore platform. It also contains a detailed explanation of different practical installation processes for different types of offshore platforms from different categories of fixed and floating structures highlighting that different types of structures require different methods of installation and different installation methods can also be used for the same type of offshore structure. It summarizes some conclusions learned from the scientific report and that could contribute in pursuing future research in the field of offshore classification and installation.
