المستخلص The present study is based on a synchronic study, depending on the analytic-descriptive approach followed in the field of sociolinguistics. The method of analysis used is written documents by authorized recordings of tour guides. The guides have been divided into three groups: beginners; mid-career; and experienced 9professional) ones. The study is concerned with answering the question: How can intellectual and social variables affect language practices on the part of different guides speaking French. This has resulted in dividing the study into three chapters, where each chapter contains two parts. The first chapter deals with the theoretical approach of William Labov in sociolinguistics. In this chapter, the topic and the tools used in analysis have been identified. It also introduces Sociolinguistics and the French Language in Egypt through the legal and political limits. Chapter Two deals with, in the first part, the sources and the materials of the study that are made clear in the written data of the field study, the social and the economic status of the guides. The second part analyzes the external elements, which may affect the language of the guide, including the social variables. The third chapter analyzes, in the first part, the linguistic phenomena that came as a result of overlapping languages, marks of formation such as stopping, pausing, and extension. The second part compares the three groups. The comparison is based on the basis of language competence suggested by Alex Vanneste to reach the points of differences in the usage of French by guides in Upper Egypt. All in all, the study aims at pointing out the overlapping elements of French used by guides. It also tries to measure the degree that intellectual identity can affect the different groups of Upper Egyptian guides. |
