Abstract

Introduction: role of cardiac catheterization in pediatric cardiology, the incidence of nephropathy related to contrast use in it and the diagnostic biomarkers for such nephropathy.
Aim of the work: we aimed to evaluate using serum NGAL level the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy in children of congenital cyanotic and acyanotic heart disease undergoing angiography during cardiac catheterization
Study Plan: The present study is observational prospective cohort study applied to children with congenital heart diseases receiving contrast media during either diagnostic or therapeutic cardiac catheterization.
Results: show change of serum NGAL levels in both cyanotic and acyanotic subgroups after contrast administration showing higher significant change in NGAL levels after contrast in the cyanotic group than the acyanotic one. On the other hand serum creatinine showed no significant change.
Summary and conclusion: A high significant elevation of serum NGAL level was found after contrast administration in congenital heart disease patients with much higher and earlier elevation in cyanotic children. In addition, negative correlation between arterial oxygen saturation of cyanotic children and basal NGAL levels of the same children was detected.
