Abstract Psoriasis is a common and complex disease affecting approximately 2% to 3% of the world population. This disease can manifest itself in the skin as dusky red, sharply demarcated, scaly plaques which are particularly present over the extensors surfaces and scalp as well as affect the nails and joints of patients. In skin, nails and joints, the fundamental pathological process underlying altered tissue structure and function is chronic inflammation. Psoriasis affects both sexes equally and can occur at any age although it most commonly appears for the first time between the age of 15 and 25 years. The disease may be provoked in genetically predisposed individuals by a number of precipitating factors including stress, alcohol consumption, drugs, skin trauma, infections and hormonal factors. |
