Abstract

Birds specially pet birds are one of birds species are closely to men , but many times it may considered as a source of diseases to both man and animals. Internationally, there is an increasing awareness amongst biologist to the need of gathering information on wild birds’ diseases.
The present study was conducted to assess the occurrence of Escherichia coli in captive wild birds and studying its virulence.
The present study was conducted to assess the occurrence of Escherichia coli in captive wild birds in Alexandria zoo ,Egypt , studying its virulence and resist it by diagnosis and treatment.
The samples were examined bacteriologically and its isolated were confirmed biochemically (catalase test , Oxidase test, Indole test, Methyle red test, Voges Proskauer test, citrate utilization test, Urease test ).
The obtained results were summarized as following :
1- The incidence of E. coli bacteria in apparently healthy and diseased zoo birds in Alexandria zoo . Isolation and identification E. Coli bacteria
2-Out of 50 examined zoo birds 150 isolates were recovered. 40 apparently healthy zoo birds ( Indian peacock , White peacock ,Harlequin peacock ,Emu ,Ostrich ,White stroke, White pelican ,South African falcon, Greated spotted eagle, Greater flamingo, Helmeted guinea fowl ) , bacterial isolation was carried out by means of cloacal swabs , 100% of birds were positive for E. coli .
3- O158, O159, O18, O27 serotypes were detected as 40,10,10,10 % respectively.
4-10 isolates of E. coli were subjected to PCR examination to demonstrate PhoA and Iss virulence genes in isolated E. coli , only 2 out of 10 strain were positive( O158,O18 seotypes ).
5- Sensitivity test cleared that both Gentamicin and Polymixin B are drugs of choice .
These results demonstrate that birds that were analyzed may carry and spread this microbe, and preventive measures for human exposure should be determined, as these microorganisms are of public health concerns.
