Abstract

The temporomandibular joint disorders are represented significant important health problems among the population especially the ages ranges from 17 to 40 years. The causes of the temporomandibular joint pain or dysfunction include internal derangement, osteoarthritis, chronic recurrent dislocation, ankylosis, neoplasia and infection.
The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders among dental students in Ain Shams University and to correlate between clinical and radiographic findings in positive cases.
732 students (432 females, 300 males) were subjected to this study. Each of them was given a printed pre-evaluation questionnaire to determine the positive cases with temporomandibular joint disorders. 150 cases were positive. The positive cases only were subjected to history taken of the chief complaints, clinical examinations and some selected cases of them to radiographic examinations (MRI and TMJ tomograms). The positive cases were classified into MPD, internal derangement, dislocation and subluxation and fractured condyles.
The data of the clinical examinations were correlated to the data of the radiographic examinations. Helkimo indices were used to determine the severity of the TMDs among the students.
The myofacial pain- dysfunction syndrome and the internal derangement were the most prevalent disorders among the students.
TMJ sound especially clicking, TMJ pain / or tenderness, pain on movement of the jaw and somewhat important jaw function were the most prevalent chief complaints and clinical findings among the students. The para-functional habits were associated with TMJ disorders among large numbers nof dental students especially clenching and bruxism that the most common habits between the students.
The deranged occlusions among the positive cases were 94 (62.7%) [65 females, (59.6%) and 38 males, (40.4%)] that represented a high percentage among the positive cases and given an important role as a predisposing for inducing TMDs. 17 cases only had an orthodontic treatment but the treatment did not given a relief of the complaints.
There were well significant correlation between the data of the clinical examinations and the data of the radiographic examinations of the positive cases.
Acorroding to Helkimo indices, the most cases were mild in severity and the rest of the cases were between moderate and sever.
The females were more affected in all TMJ disorders compared to the males and had severer chief complaints, signs and symptoms, more deranged occlusions and more clinical findings than males.
Therefore, the need still exist for the conduction of more researches to the incidences of TMDs and its etiological factors in different population, age groups, social categories and occupations.
