Abstract

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is considered one of the most important crops in Egypt and worldwide. Peanut plantations in Egypt are subjected to many diseases caused by soil fungi which lead to severe losses in yield and quality of peanut crop. Those diseases are root rot and pod rot.
This study aims to isolate the causal pathogens of root and pod rot diseases of peanuts, and to study the varietal reaction of some peanut cultivars to the infection with certain soil pathogens. A group of soil microorganisms which are able to produce plant growth promoting substances and to control pathogenic soil fungi was isolated to study their role in supplying peanut plants with essential nutritional elements for growth. Peanut plants were treated with those beneficial soil microorganisms to study their effects on yield increase and characteristics The role of some plant extracts in controlling pathogenic fungi was studied for their role in increasing yield amount and quality of peanut plants.
