Abstract Genital tract trauma can be caused by episiotomy, spontaneous lacerations, or both which cause short-term and long-term problems for the mothers. Several risk factors have been established for the development of these perineal injuries. This study aimed to assess the perineal trauma and to identify the risk factors of perineal trauma during vaginal delivery. A descriptive study on all women with a planned singleton vaginal delivery between October 2012 to May 2013 in Mansoura General Hospital .A random sample of 150 parturient women was included Two tools were used for data collection interview sheet and observation checklist. The outcome measures were incidence, types of perineal trauma, and risk factors associated with perineal trauma. The proportion of women with an intact perineum at delivery was 55.3%, the rest had perineal trauma. Second and third degree tear constituted 45.4% of the sample, while 54.6% had first degree tear. Women age, parity, short birth interval, birth attendant, previous attack of perineal trauma was significantly associated with perineal trauma. In addition, perineal management technique was significantly associated with perineal trauma (p=0.00). Conclusion. previous exposure to perineal trauma, current perineal condition and the use of perineal management techniques are independent risk factors for perineal trauma. Recommendation. episiotomy should be reserved for specific fetal and maternal indications and birth attendant need to be educated about perineal care measures to avoid perineal trauma |
