Abstract

The incidence of major fetal abnormalities apparent at birth is 2 to 3 %. Prenatal diagnosis is the science of identifying structural or functional abnormalities in the fetus. With this information, clinicians hope to provide appropriate counseling and optimize outcome. Over the past years, the role of the fetal imaging specialist has evolved from just listing the anomalies detected in a fetus, to recognizing the specific syndrome or sequence or association of which these anomalies are components of. This facilitates proper counseling of the parents as well as management planning.
It is well known for those who are involved in the field of prenatal diagnosis, that the technological evolution in the ultrasound machines, providing very high resolution, and tremendous details of fetal anatomy, made it possible to detect a whole new range of sonographic abnormalities. In this work we developed a sonographic based prenatal diagnostic decision support system, with the characteristics of an electronic medical textbook, medical reference system and a decision support tool. Through providing sonographic findings by the user the software starts to provide a list of potential diagnoses, and then suggests further sonographic findings, to look for, that would be useful to narrow the possibilities. It can also provide information about the syndromes diagnosed, its prognosis, recurrence rate and genetic background if any.
