Abstract

Burn is one of the most devastating conditions encountered all over the world, it represents an assault on all aspects of the patient’s life. It affects all ages from babies to elderly and is a problem in both the developed and developing world.
First degree burns affect only the outer layer of the skin (epidermis), causing pain and redness. Sunburn as superficial second degree burns extend to the second layer of the skin (the dermis), causing pain, redness, and blisters that may ooze. Deep second degree burns may complicate by infection to third degree burns over the course of several days. Third degree burns involve both layers of the skin and may also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons. The burn site appears pale, charred. There is generally no pain in the area because the nerve endings are destroyed. Fourth degree burns extend through the skin and subcutaneous fat into the underlying muscle and bone, they are stiff and charred
According to Alexandria Main University Hospital statistical records, the infection control unit estimated that the monthly infection incidence rates of burn wounds ranged from a minimum of 21.5% in August to a maximum of 51.7% in May, 2011.These figures ranged from 28.2% in May to 80.6% in July, 2012.
All hospitals therefore must have infection control policies and procedures and hospital staff must take every precaution to avoid infection. However, the risk of infection can never be completely eliminated and some patients have a higher risk of acquiring infection than others. In this context, hygiene, education and cleaning of physical environment are important approaches for infection control
The aim of the present study was to identify the effect of applying a nursing staff development program on infection control nursing practices for patients with moderate degree burns.
The present study was conducted at the Burn Unit, Main university hospital, Alexandria University, the subjects of the study were composed of two groups:
group 1(Expert group)
This group included experts from education and service fields for determining recent acceptable guidelines for infection control and prevention for burn patients in Egypt.
group II (nurses)
This group included all diplomas and bachelor degree of nursing graduates involved in providing direct nursing care for patients at the Burn Unit, their number are (30).
To verify the aim of the study, four tools were used:-
- Tool one: Basic Burn Infection Control Nursing Practices Opinionnaire.
- Tool two: Burn Unit Environment Structure Checklist
- Tool three: Infection Control Nurses Practices Knowledge Questionnaire.
- Tool Four: Infection Control Nurses Practices Performance Checklist. The staff development program was prepared and implemented, it included infection control policies ,basic knowledge about infection control, common clinical procedures as hand hygiene, ,care of burn wounds, assisting in central line insertion and urinary catheterization and personal protective equipment, as well as medical waste management.
