Abstract

This thesis is concerned with Digital Video Broadcasting via Satellite (DVB-S) systems according to the European Telecom- munications Standards Institute(ETSI) to manage the transmis- sion of digital video signal using the satellite.
Recently, DVB has been evolved to improve the spectrum efficiency of current multimedia communications.
The thesis starts with a complete overview on the DVB-S standards and systems then it focuses on the DVB-S2 system and its extension with most of their specifications mentioned in the standards with demonstration of the Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) modulation technique. Various algorithms are presented for APSK optimization such as minimum Euclidean distance maximization, and mutual information maximization.
Different channel coding techniques are used to correct the signal and to eliminate the satellite noise effect such as BCH coding, and LDPC coding were also discussed.
In this thesis, the main features for the second generation of satellite DVB (DVB-S2) are summarized and its error per- formance evaluation are presented by upgrading MATLAB sim-
ulation model. Moreover, the error performance of this system acquired through simulation is compared with the field measure- ments to validate it.
Furthermore, a new version of DVB-S2 (DVB-S2X) is simu- lated to evaluate its performance. The validity of the simulation program is tested by comparing it with the standard error per- formance.
On the other hand, from the simulation results, it is found that DVB-S2X improves the capacity and the spectral efficiency at high Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) due to the new higher order APSK modulation. Moreover, the new coding ratios for DVB- S2X increase the granularity for more capacity options, and pro- vide certain MODulation and CODing (MODCOD) optimized only for linear channel.
Finally, the new smaller filter roll-off factors added to DVB- S2X increases the bit rate capacity relative to the bandwidth, but it requires a highly complex filter design.
