Abstract

In this thesis, the performance of a series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle (Toyota Prius THS II) system is analyzed. The conventional series-parallel hybrid vehicle uses nickel-metal hydride batteries. A passive parallel hybrid energy storage system is used. The passive parallel hybrid energy storage system consists of nickel-metal hydride batteries and ultra-capacitors. The hybrid storage system is designed to reduce the total weight of the energy storage system and in turn increases the overall efficiency.
The performance of the vehicle using conventional and passive hybrid energy storage system was simulated by MATLAB/SIMULINK.
An active parallel hybrid storage system is modeled. A bi-directional DC-DC converter is developed to regulate the power between the batteries and ultra-capacitors.
Finally, A prototype driving system is designed to evaluate the performance of the hybrid storage system, experimentally. The performance of the prototype driving system was modeled and simulated MATLAB/SIMULINK.
