Abstract

Recently numerous studies have been done to investigate the effects of the extremely low frequency electric fields [ELF-EFs] on biological system, however, the results of different studies are quite variable and the mechanisms of action of ELF-EFs are still poorly defined. Still the question whether extremely low frequency Electric fields cause biological effects is of special interest. This work is dedicated to study the effects of such fields on some biophysical properties of rat tissues as a step forward to lay down safe limits and standards of exposure to these fields. The effects of exposure to extremely low frequency electric field 4KV/m on Red Blood Cells mechanical, structural, and rheological properties of albino rat were studied.
In the presence work 50 male albino rats, each of average weight 200±10 gm. divided into six main groups, namely group A, B, C, D, E and group F. Animals of group A (15 animals) are used as a unexposed group and didn’t receive any treatment and housed at normal environmental conditions (the temperature inside the lab varied between 240 and 270 C, lighting condition are natural light from large windows during the day and complete darkness during the night). Animals of groups B, C, D, E and F were exposed 8h/day to an electric field, of 4KV/m-50Hz, for periods of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 days to repeatedly.. At the end of the exposure period the animals were immediately sacrificed and blood samples from each animal was collected for experimental investigation.
