Abstract

Background Few reports have compared laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) to laparoscopic Roux-en-Y procedure (LRNY). This study aims at comparing the 1-year follow-up results of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and mini gastric bypass (MGB or omega gastric bypass (OGB)) in terms of weight loss, resolution of co-morbidities and complications.
Methods A randomized controlled study on collected database was done from August 2014 to December 2015 (minimum 1-year follow up).
During this period, 15 patients underwent LSG and another 15 patients who underwent MGB in the same time period. The results were compared.
Results Follow-up was achieved in 15 LSG vs 15 MGB patients up to 1 year. Mean BMI for patients who had LSG and MGB was 47.8 kg/m² ± 3.77 SD and 48.05 Kg/m² ± 4.93 SD respectively. As regard percentage of excess weight loss, in LSG group and MGB group, it was 38.68% and 32.28% respectively after 3 months, 57.26% and 62.52% after 6 months, 64.54% and 65.35% after 9 months and 77.42% and 81.89% at 12 months respectively. MGB was superior to LSG as regard remission of comorbidities. The overall complication rate was statically higher in MGB group.
Conclusions Both MGB and LSG are safe, short, and simple operations. Weight loss is similar in MGB and LSG in the first year. MGB is superior as regard co-morbidity resolution but with higher complication rate than LSG.
