Abstract Acute abdomen is a medical emergency, in which there is sudden and severe pain in abdomen of recent onset with accompanying signs and symptoms that focus on an abdominal involvement. It can represent a wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from a benign and self-limiting disease to a surgical emergency. At present, minimally invasive techniques are being routinely employed not only in patients who have undergone previous operation but also in such surgical diseases as adhesive small bowel obstruction, incisional hernia repair, and colostomy reversal. Laparoscopy can identify abnormal findings and improve the outcome in a majority of patients with acute abdomen, as it allows surgeons to see and treat many abdominal conditions that cannot be diagnosed otherwise. It is a safe and effective tool and can establish the etiology and allows for appropriate interventions in such cases. |
