Abstract

The study is divided into 4 chapters: an introduction, two chapters on the two poets under study and a conclusion. The Introduction attempts to contextualize the research topic from a performance studies perspective. It presents the main definitions of performance poetry, introducing the different genres, styles and main figures in the field, without restricting the selection to English and Arabic or any other limitation such as gender or historical period. Chapter Two focuses on a selection of performed poems by Maya Angelou, presenting the two mediums, the performance elements, and the poetic elements: the themes of social and political oppression, word choice and choice of language variety: the dialects colloquial (Black English and Colloquial Egyptian Arabic). Chapter Three focuses on a selection of performed poems by Iman Bakri. A comparative literature analysis of the selected poems based on previously stated elements of performance poetry: the medium of performance and the literary or poetic medium, such as, themes, language choice and/or other. The Conclusion wraps up the discussion presented in the study and compares and contrasts the main features of the performed poetry of the selected two poets.
