Abstract

Family Asteraceae(Compositae) is one of the largest families
of the flowering plants. It is represented in Egypt by 97 genera
including 230 species. Onopordum is a genus including about 40
species. Genus Onopordum is represented in Egypt by only two
species Onopordum alexandrinum and Onopordum ambiguum. On
reviewing the literature, it was found that several plants of the genus
Onopordum showed antimicrobial and antitumor activities.
Onopordum alexandrinum is used as expectorant and for healing
wounds and as a treatment of skin cancers
