Abstract Pyridine and 2-pyridone units are found in a variety of interesting biologically active compounds whether natural or synthetic. Data show that compounds possessing these simple heterocyclic moieties have been found to possess versatile biological activities including antiulcer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, anticoagulant, anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and many other activities. The present thesis is subdivided into the following chapters: Chapter I Introduction Introduction presented a brief literature review describing the various biological activities of pyridine and 2-pyridone units containing pharmaceutically interesting compounds. Chapter II Research Objectives This chapter indicated the rationale upon which the synthesized compounds were designed and prepared. The compounds were designed based on the presence of pyridine and 2-pyridone units. Chapter III Discussion In this chapter, the theories upon which the design and synthesis of the intermediates and final compounds were presented. References were made to the knowledge available in literature as well as the confirmation of the structures of newly synthesized compounds by different chemical and spectral means. |
