Abstract Tobacco smoking remains the single greatest cause of preventable illness and death worldwide. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body causing many diseases and reduces the health of smokers in general. Smoking is a modern day epidemic that poses substantial health burden and cost. University students are at high risk of smoking as they become exposed to greater availability of cigarettes and intimate association with smoking peers. At the same time, they face additional social, emotional and educational challenges when they enter the university. The most commonly used tobacco product among teenagers is cigarettes, followed by cigars and smokeless tobacco. Regardless of the type of tobacco product, starting smoking during adolescence is an especially important health challenge because of the potential for longer consumption of tobacco across a lifetime and the related negative health impacts. The aim of the present work is to help and improve smoking cessation by estimate the prevalence of smoking among university students and assess the risk factors of smoking among Kafr El-sheikh university students in Kafr El-sheikh city. To achieve such aim, a cross-sectional study was conducted among students in Kafr Al Sheikh university students in Kafr Al Sheikh city. Sample size was calculated from each faculty, students′ number was chosen proportionally by simple random sample in the period from the first of september2015 to the end of February 2016. All faculties in Kafr El-sheikh University in Kafr El-sheikh city were included in the study. They were classified into practical faculties (Medicine, Physical Education, Nursing, Engineering, Science, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy) and theoretical faculties (Commerce, Education, Specific education and Arts). The sample size was calculated using EPI-INFO program version (7) depending on the total number of students registered in all faculties of Kafr El-sheikh University in Kafr El-sheikh city during year 2015-2016.The sample size was 220 students. All students who participated in the study were subjected to evaluation through using a predesigned questionnaire through directed interview with students. The main finding of this study was that about a (11%) of Kafr Elsheikh University students were current smokers. There was a higher prevalence of current smokers at faculty of Commerce than other faculties of Kfr El sheikh university and the prevalence of current smokers among males was significantly higher than among females and the mean age of starting smoking (years) was15.3±3.2 years and the possible motives for smoking among smokers group were expression of virility followed by parents are smokers , think smoking prevent weight gain and finally friends are smokers. And a happy surprise that100% of smokers have Previous trial to quit and 20.9% of smokers have Previous use of nicotine patch, 50% of smokers have Previous use of E- cigarette, 70.8% of smokers Can easily get on cigarettes, 60.8% of smoker students seeing that Teachers had role in smoking cessation and 65.2% of smokers Knowing centers help smoking cessation, the mean Source of first cigarette 42%was smokers themselves,25%from parents, 21%from relatives, 12%from friends, 42%of smokers students working with studying in the faculties, 95.8% smoke Cigarettes does not mix with other components, 33.3% of smokers Family know about smoking and only 29.2% of Family provide help about smoking cessation. |
