Abstract Carbimazole is an antithyroid drug belongs to the family of thioamides. Carbimazole is a pro-drug as after absorption it is converted to the active form, methimazole. Methimazole prevents the thyroid peroxidase enzyme from coupling and iodinating the tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, hence reducing the production of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 (Thyroxin). On the other hand, the use of carbimazole was accompanied by side effects like headaches, pruritus (itching), nausea, blood disorders, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting and stomach aches, myalgia (muscle pain), arthralgia (joint pain), jaundice (yellowing of the skin), hair loss, and a skin rash. Other serious side effects may occur as bone marrow suppression causing neutropenia and agranulocytosis. This may occur at any stage during treatment and without warning and accompanied by signs of an infection like a fever, a sore throat or mouth ulcers. In recent time, many natural products are being used to protect the tissues from various drugs or chemicals-induced toxicities. The rhizome of ginger (Zingiber officinale) is one among of botanicals which play an important role in pharmacology and treatment of various diseases. In traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, ginger has been used to treat a wide range of ailments including stomach aches, diarrhea. |
