This research represents an attempt to study the cajolery poetry of Alexandrians, then to identify
the nature of this poetical purpose of Arab poets . Further more to identify the similarities and
different aspects between the two literatures in terms of the circulated notion in the cajolery
purpose both of Alexandrian and Abyssinian poets. so, I returned to study the eulogy poetry and its
natural development during the Alexandrian epoch to Cajolery under certain political, Cultural and
religious circumstances during the period 323-221 B.C., under the first three Ptolemies .
•• This aim was achieved in the light of the poems of in Callimachus , Theocritus and Asclepiades .
I have, like wise, studied the cajolery poetry of Arabs in the Abyssinian era during in the third
and fourth A. H centuries . This genere of eulogy poetry is by lbn El - Rummy ,El - Buhtry and El -
Mutanaby poems as they are poets who show considerable amount of cajolery poetry .
Upon this ,I have divided my thesis in to a
preliminary chapter , three parts and a conclusion
•• in the preliminary chapter I handled the definition among the Greeks through studying the
concept of eulogy of ”Aristotle” in his (Rhetoric) According to his view eulogy and cajolery and
eulogy are two poetical purposes which are different basically in style and target with respect to
each other . Eulogy, on the one hand, is one of the Epideictic rhetoric purposes which is a kind of
the three rhetorical genres according to ”Aristotle ”; there are a difference as to the Epideictic
rhetoric between eulogy and the laud of a person
.As for the cajolery , it is another poetical purpose which is different in definition,
substantially in respect to the eulogy, Its divisions and types are mentioned in the Gorgias
Dialogue
but it was fully explained Aristotle’s while elucidating his theory of ( The golden Medium
).
. Then , I have handled my thesis in three respective parts as follows:

Pirst part:
{(
”Cajofery (]!oetry in tfz e Jfe{{enistic <Era
Which includes two chapters: -

)> First chapter : ” Evolution of Eulogy Poetry among the Greeks ”
Through which , I have handled the evolution of eulogy purpose among the epochs of Greek literature
,starting with epic poetry and ending in tragedy ;Indeed also with the extent of the impact of this
purpose by the different political influences .
)> Second chapter: ”Circumstances that led to the Appearance of Cajolery poetry within the Study
Period (323-221 B .C. )and Patterns of this poetry” .
./ The Circumstances that led to the appearance of cajolery poetry within the study period are
Political ones, represented by the absolute power of autocratic ruling system and its relations with
the poets. and Cultural conditions in respect to the cultural attractive orgainzation in Alexandria
( The library and the mouseion). The Religious circumstances are represented
by terms of the breakdown of religion and existence of new cults such as ( Serapis ) and the
deification of Kings.
./ Patterns of this poetry are repressented for the purpose as examples ; these were eXtracted
from (Callimachus’ works (hymns to ” Zeus ”, ” Delos” and ” Apollo ”- epigram no. (52) Coma
Berenices ’poem. and ”Theocritus’ works ( The Idyll no. · 14,15,16,17 ) and ” Asclepiade’ (Epigram
no. 68) in eulogy of the Ptolemaic dynasty . ( Aratus ’Hymn to Pan and his
Phaenomena) rn eulogy of the Macedonian King Antigonus Gonatas .
