Abstract Imaging applications need high frequency sources with reasonable power consumption levels while maintaining low cost and compact size. This has been a challenge to achieve in the past few years using the traditional LC-lumped based oscillators. As a result, the concept of using transmission lines in oscillators has emerged. The proposed transceiver is based on rotary traveling wave oscillator (RTWO) implemented using commercial 65nm CMOS technology. The proposed transceiver requirements have been highlighted. The modeling and design of rotary traveling wave oscillator has been carried out at 85GHz. In addition, the architecture and circuits of the TX and RX chains are presented including oscillator buffers, double balanced mixer and on-chip dipole antennas over artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). Physical implementation of most the transceiver top level has been carried out. The transceiver is implemented with a total area of 1.2 x 2 mm2. |
