Abstract

Sexton is a sensitive poet who endures pain and depression that turn her life into a fertile soil for her poetry. She grants the world her gift through poetry. Her poetry is a revelation of internal and imaginative life. Her life can be depicted accurately as a series of journeys for her quest searching for identity, religion and woman freedom. Her poetry is a valid record of these journeys; this imposes its effect of the divisions of this thesis. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One: Women in Anne Sexton’s Poetry focuses on Sexton as a significant voice that reveals the female crisis from biological, cultural, human and literary sides. She is one of the first females’ awakened voices that fought against male injusticem as the leading power in the society. Chapter Two: The Death Instinct in Anne Sexton’s Poetry investigates her various attitudes towards death as manifest in her poetry, and it probes the new ways of dealing with death to create life. The chapter deals with death and suicidal poems and some nelegies that offer a new perspective of death. Chapter three : Sexton’s Quest for God follows her search for remedy via religion. In her final years, she underwent a series of losses : failure in marriage, losing motherhood, destroying the grace of friendship, losing a lover and losing her mental iv health. She finds no resort but towards God. Searching for God is a key theme in her poetry. Chapter Four : Sexton’s Techniques, includes the most important techniques that are used by Sexton like confession, humor, black humor, irony and others. This chapter will examine her techniques in the process of the exploration of some of her important poems and themes. The conclusion will sum up the thesis contributions to the examination of Sexton`s poetry, themes and techniques.
