Abstract

This research discusses The disposal of residuals that produced from water treatment by reusing it in hot mix asphalt industry for a sustainable environment. The considerable consumption of water has favored the increase in the number of drinking water purification plants and, consequently, the production of drinking water residuals. Alum salts are commonly used in the water industry to promote coagulation in the production of clean drinking water, which results in the generation and accumulation of ‘waste’ by-product ‘alum residuals’ in large volumes.This paper proposes a protocol of reusing the water residuals in hot mix asphalt industry to reduce the burdens of the properties on the environment. Residuals were obtained from three different water purification plants. El-Mansoura water Purification plant, Abo Fares water Purification plant and Galia water Purification plant. The residuals were heated to 60ºC for 24 hours for dewatering. They were then let to be cooled for 12 hours, crushed through a crusher then sieved on the 4# sieve. Different percent 5, 10 and 15% of residuals were added to a designed hot mix asphalt as a replacement of part of the sand.
from Marshall Test results showed that the different percent of added Residuals made a significant change in Marshall design properties. The Main behavior of residuals mixes properties is generally has the same trend. The stability, air voids and VMA increased although The flow, bulk density and VFA decreased but all of them still in the limits of the Egyptian code.
