Abstract

A retrospective study of ninety seven patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia attending pediatric oncology department at El-Minia Oncology center. All patients treated with Total- XV protocol during the period from January 2009 to April 2012.
Pretreatment evaluation and data collection of the patients at presentation included age ,sex, clinical examination ,CBC, B.M.A for morphology, and CSF analysis in addition to other investigations including liver function, kidney function, electrolytes, coagulation profile, echocardiography and chest x-ray. Patients were revaluated by B.M.A at day 15 of induction and end of induction to assess response to treatment.
The 3-years DFS and 3- years OS were 77.2 % and 83.4% respectively for the patients enrolled in the study. Significant correlation was reported between prognostic factors including (age, Initial TLC, FAB and risk stratification) and overall survival, while initial TLC of the patients was the only factor with prognostic significance on 3-years DFS.
Mortality was reported in 16.5% of the studied patients. Most common phase of treatment during which deaths occurred was induction 43.7% and re-induction 37.5% followed by maintenance 12.5% and finally by consolidation 6.3%. The majority of deaths were due to sepsis (62.5%) followed by bronchopneumonia, finally brain and renal insults.
Abandonment of treatment was reported in 15% of patients enrolled in this study mainly during maintenance therapy.
