Abstract

ٍStudy of Prevalence of House Dust-Mite Allergy Among Allergic Rhinitis Patients in Egypt.
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a worldwide problem that continues to remain a common and agonizing illness to patients and their families. It is estimated that in developed countries approximately 30% of the general population suffer from one or more allergic disorders, of which allergic rhinitis is particularly common.
Although AR may have its onset at any age, it is greatest at childhood and adolescence, with a decrease in incidence seen in advancing age.
House-dust contains most of the indoor allergens. Mites are the most egregious allergen in house dust. HDM live off human skin scales and thrive in a warm and humid environment. It is therefore found in abundance in bed linen, mattresses, pillows, carpets, and upholstered fabric. Not uncommonly patients note that their symptoms improve when they go abroad to a hot or dry climate.
There is increasing evidence that mite allergens are important in the etiology and perhaps the pathogenesis of perennial rhinitis. HDM allergens may be more potent than other allergens because they are ubiquitous or because the airborne particles are small and are easily respired.
Often treatment of AR is initiated on initial diagnosis of symptoms and/or allergen-specific test. There are four general principles for clinical management of allergy: avoidance of allergens/triggering factors, use of appropriate pharmacotherapy, evaluation of need for immunotherapy and its use where appropriate, patient education and follow-up.
This study aimed to describe the frequency of house dust mite allergy among allergic rhinitis Egyptian patients.
This cross sectional randomized study included 200 consecutive patients referred to the allergy and immunology outpatient clinic at Ain Shams University for symptoms of allergic rhinitis during January 2012 to end of March 2013.
All patients were subjected to do skin prick test to HDM, then those of positive cases were confirmed by specific IgE test to HDM.
Statistical analysis for the results was done, and we found that:
1-112(56%) of studied patients showed positive SPT reactions to one or more allergens. 48(24%) patients were mono-sensitized and 88 patients were with negative SPT.
2-The prevalence of sensitization to HDMs allergen were 64 patients (32%) among allergic rhinitis patients group.
from this study we concluded that prevalence of HDM sensitization among allergic rhinitis Egyptian patients was 32%, and this was defined by SPT and confirmed by serum immunoglobulin specific IgE.
