Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate a new MTA-based sealer regarding its physical properties, interfacial adaptability, and antibacterial effect comparing it to AH Plus.
Materials and Methods:
Eighty discs (40 each sealer) were subdivided into 4 subgroups for the evaluation of pH, radio-opacity, initial and final setting time, and solubility. Sixty eight teeth were decoronated, instrumented, dried and obturated using lateral compaction technique (34 teeth using each sealer) and subdivided into 3 subgroups for evaluation of adhesion using push-out test, sealing ability using fluid filtration, and adaptability using SEM. E. faecalis (ATCC 29212) was used to test for the antibacterial effect using the agar diffusion test before setting and direct contact test after setting of the sealer. Data was subjected to statistical analysis.
Results:
MTA-Fillapex has shown an alkaline pH at all observation periods which was statistically significantly higher than AH Plus. It showed mean radio-opacity value comparable to AH Plus. It has mean initial and final setting times statistically significantly shorter than AH Plus. MTA-Fillapex showed mean percentage weight loss statistically significantly higher than AH Plus.
MTA-Fillapex showed mean push-out bond strength at all levels statistically significantly lower than those of AH Plus. Both sealers showed comparable mean leakage values without a statistically significant difference. MTA-Fillapex showed statistically significantly higher percentage of gaps at all root levels than AH Plus with median score 1 compared to median score 2 for AH Plus.
MTA-Fillapex demonstrated antibacterial effect against E. faecalis before setting. Both sealers did not show antibacterial effect after setting using the direct contact test.
