Abstract Alopecia areata (AA) is a common, non-scarring, autoimmune disease. It can affect any hair-bearing area. Although various lines of management have been described for this condition, no single treatment has been shown to alter the course of the disease. Platelet rich plasma(PRP) is an autologous platelets that are concentrated in a small volume of plasma. PRP contain abundant GFs which stimulate the formation of hair epithelium and the differentiation of stem cells into HF cells. We aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of PRP for the treatment of AA. This study was carried out on 50 patients complaining of multilocular AA. Only 41 patients completed the study. We observed that administration of PRP led to significant hair regrowth compared with placebo. Furthermore, grade 1 was the best to show improvement. The reported side effects were few and minor and of shorter duration. Pain was quite tolerable, without the need for analgesics after treatment or discontinuation of the sessions. No patients complained of any erythema or tenderness for more than first few hours after session. PRP is safe, easy to perform with minimal tolerable side effects and with no restriction to normal daily activities. |
