Abstract

The present work is a study of the effect of slurry particle type, impact angle, specimen type, specimen shape, and test duration time on the erosion process. Erosion can be a serious deteriorating effect in many engineering systems, including pipelines and valves handling gases, hydraulic systems, aerospace components, and liquid impellers. In the present work, slurry erosion, and cavitation erosion were studied. The slurry erosion and cavitation phenomenon are important to be studied due to the effect of them on wear damages. Which change the surface geometry of the parts, components of machines that will affect the performance and efficiency of the parts to be lower than design and may be cause the parts failure. Hydraulic machine materials are routinely tested under laboratory conditions to study the effects of slurry erosion and cavitation erosion. The material removal may occur by either of the modes or by their combined effect. To evaluate the damage in the latter case, where the damage can be severe, there is a need for a suitable test method that combines the two modes. A specially designed test-rig is built up to study the effect of different parameters on material samples erosion which rotating in test pot, in the present work and for the future work. The test-rig is based on Specimens rotate in slurry pot with a controlled speed to simulate a relative velocity between slurry and specimens Experimental test was carried out to investigate the influence of slurry particle type, impact angle, specimen type, specimen shape, and test time on the erosion process. The specimens types according to the present work are; Stainless steel 316L, Stainless steel 304L, and nickel coated steel 37. Particles with water are concentration of 40 wt. %. The particle maximum dimension is 550 µm. It is concluded that test rig is valid to investigate the slurry erosion and cavitation erosion due to different particles, fluid, velocity, specimens (materials, geometry). Results show that; the sand particles case higher weight loss than mud particles, impact angle has a great effect on weight loss, for the stainless steel 304, the maximum weight loss around 47o impact angle, for light work used nickel coating steel 37 is good, but for heavy work with slurry Stainless steel is required.
