Abstract

The fusion cast zircon-alumina refractories are used without competition from other refreactories in the lining of glass melting tanks. However, recent trend using similar compositions of bricks made by sint ring technique is widely spreading. This is due to the relatively lower costs besidsome advantages including their relatively high thermal shock resistivity. Also, these refractories are recommended for application in the steel industry as ladle bricks for high capacity ladles (>100 tons capa:city). Therefore, the present work was carried out in order to study the constitution and properties of some zircon-alumina refractories prepared by the semidry pressing and slip casting techniques presently available in the Egyptian refractories plants.
The study proceed along the investigational lines given below.
CHAPTERI:Densification, Phase Constitution and
Microstructure of Zircon-Aiumina-Silica(ZAS} Compositions.
This chapter aimed to increase t:P.e understanding of how composition, additives and firing temperature affe t the densification, phase constitution and microstructure of zircon alumina-silica (ZAS) compositions. The results obtained will
xu
be taken in consideration in the planned investigated zircon
alumina refractories in chapter n.
CHAPTER II: Study of Some Zircon-Alumina Refractories Containing 10-40% Zirconia Using Commercial Raw Materials and Available Processing Techniques in Egyptian Plants.
The aim of this chapter of the present work was the stUdy of the constitution and properties of some zircon-alumina refractories containing 10-40% Zr02 made using commercial starting materials. The studierefractories were prepared by the semidry pressing and slip casting techniques. Mineral and chemical compositions of the used staring materials were determined. An attempt was made to correlate the high temperature formed phases with the densification properties and the texture and microstructure developed in the fired compositions up to 1550°C. Evaluation of the prepared compositions attaining high density and refractory quality was carried out, by measuring their thermal shock and corrosion resistivities. Accordingly, some compositions were recommended for the manufacture of glass tanks and ladle linings.
