Abstract

The present study was carried out on the fetlock region of 30 animals of equine species (26 horses and 4 donkeys), divided into three studies anatomical, normal diagnostic imaging and clinical study.
The anatomical study was carried out on 2 horses to determine the minute structures in the fetlock region which help in assessment of the value of each diagnostic imaging technique in identifying them while the result can guide the examiners to specific technique suitable for each affection in the fetlock region.
The normal diagnostic imaging study was carried out on 10 animals (9 horses & 1 donkey) of equine species with apparently healthy fetlock region in order to show the standard view of normal structure in the fetlock region using the different diagnostic imaging techniques (Conventional Radiography, Digital Radiography, Ultrasonography, Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to determine afterward any abnormality involving any of the fetlock region structures.
The clinical study was carried out on 18 affected cases (15 horses & 3 donkeys) suffered from different surgical affections of the fetlock region to discuss the most common surgical affections involving this region with the aid of different diagnostic imaging techniques confirming the value of each procedure in identifying each affection.
Results of anatomical study on the apparently healthy animals revealed that there are many different minute structures that cannot be visualized easily by X-ray and ultrasound and injuries of those structures may be the cause of affection in the fetlock region. Results of normal diagnostic study were identifying the different structures viewed by the anatomical study and which techniques had a power in displaying most of them in the fetlock region. Results of clinical study gave the nature of each affection using each technique with the aid of the normal study to compare between the normal and abnormal views especially in the new modern techniques as CT and MRI.
