Abstract

The present thesis attempts to offer a pragmatic analysis of Gibran Khalil Gibran’s ( January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931). The problem of equivalence in two Arabic translations of the prophet by Tharwat Okasha and Antoonius Bashir. It will be shown that a pragmatic reading of the source text would result in a world of differences with regard to the author’s intended meaning ( the communicative intent). Pragmatics, a subfield of linguistics developed in the late 1970s, distinguishes two intents (meanings) in eash utterance and the communicative act of verbal communication. One is the informative intent or the sentence meaning, and the other is the communicative intent or speaker meaning (leech, 1983; Sperber and Wilson, 1986).
