Abstract

Since 1990s, strains of Salmonella which are resistant to a range of antimicrobials have emerged and are threatening the public health problem. Drug resistant Salmonella emerge in response to antimicrobial usage in humans and in food animals and form big pressure from misuse of antimicrobials which is a major driving force behind the emergence of resistance. Multi-drug resistance to critically important antimicrobials is compounding the problem.
And to make an attempt for researching some parts of this problem and shedding light on it samples were collected from Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, from different sites as Sedi Salem , Sedi ghazy , Desouq , Mahalet El kasab , Sakha , collected from diseased poultry (age of the collected samples varied from 3-55 days of age), 100 pooled poultry samples (liver – spleen –gall bladder – faeces by cloacal swabs) from diseased and freshly dead , during the period of July 2013 –December 2013 and were transported directly to the laboratory to be cultured on the same day.
Suspected colonies to be Salmonella were identified based on their colony morphology on selective media, biochemical and serological testing . Ten positive samples of total one hundred samples with 10 % frequency of seven positive farms from total nineteen farms with incidence of 36.8 %
The antimicrobial sensitivity phenotypes of Salmonella spp. were determined by using 14 different antibiotic discs belonging to different drug categories . Spectinomycin ,Gentamycin , Tetracycline and Cefoperazone combined with sulbactam all were 100 % sensitive .But used quinolone were 40 % sensitive and 3rd generation of cephalosporins were 20 % sensitive , Amoxicillin combined with clavulanic acid were 80 % sensitive and finally ampicillin was completely resistant with 100 %.
