Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic illness that requires continuing medical, nursing care, ongoing patient self-management education and support to prevent acute complications and to reduce the risk of chronic complications
In 2015, the prevalence of diabetes for all age groups worldwide was estimated to be 415 million people and it is expected to reach 642 million in 2040; in every 6 seconds one person dies from diabetes (5million death each year) .In Egypt, there were 7.8 million cases of diabetes .Egypt is one of the 10 top global countries in the Middle East region with the highest prevalence of diabetes. The reason for disproportionately high prevalence of diabetes in the Egypt lies mainly in lifestyle choices, lack of physical activity, smoking and obesity.
The effective management of chronic illnesses, as diabetes mellitus is a complex task that touches nearly every important aspect of daily life. It requires significant participation by patients and their families.
When patients with diabetes practice appropriate self-care management, their blood glucose levels improve, the incidence of hospitalization decreased, fewer complications are experienced and quality of life improves. Accordingly, the self-care plan interventions cannot be successful until identifying diabetic patient’s barriers to this self-care management. So, nurses and their patients collaborate to address and overcome barriers to diabetes management; in order to make life as pleasant and healthy for the patients with diabetes.
Aim of the study
The current study aimed to identify management barriers of diabetes mellitus among adult patients.
Material and method
The study was conducted at the inpatient medical department and outpatient diabetic clinics of Damanhur Main Hospital and the Health Insurance Clinic at Elmahmoudya. The subjects of the study comprised 150 patients with diabetes.
One tool was used for data collection including:
(Diabetes mellitus management barriers patients’ opinionnaire.). The tool consisted of two parts:
Part I: Socio-demographic and clinical data.
Part II: Diabetes mellitus management barriers structured interview schedule.
It included items related to physical barriers, psychosocial barriers, environmental barriers, educational barriers, financial barriers.
