Abstract CAD is the most prevalent type of cardiovascular disease; also it is considered global health problem and the leading cause of death globally. More people die annually from CAD than from any other disease. Coronary atherosclerosis considered the main cause of CAD which produces signs and symptoms according to the location and degree of narrowing of the arterial lumen, thrombus form and obstruction of blood flow to the myocardium as chest pain, dyspnea and palpitations that is brought about by myocardial ischemia. Causing various degrees of myocardial dysfunction which affect patient’s quality of life (QOL). Treatment of coronary artery disease includes medical and surgical therapy. The method of treatment is based on many factors that are determined by patient’s symptoms, physical examination and diagnostic testing .In addition, if the blockage is less than 70 percent and not severely limiting blood flow, medications as antianginal, thrombolytic, antiplatelet therapy and modification of risk factors as (smoking, hypertension and hyperlipidemia) will be the treatment. The main goal of medical therapy is to reduce factors that increase myocardial oxygen demand and improve those that impinge on oxygen supply. On the other hand if blockage is more than 70 percent and severely limiting blood flow; revascularization which includes ( Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG )) of treating coronary artery disease have relative benefits over medical therapy especially in patients with more severe ischemia and more diseased vessels. CABG surgery is a common intervention for the treatment of advanced coronary artery disease. CABG is a surgical procedure in which one or more blocked coronary arteries are bypassed by a blood vessel graft to restore normal blood flow to the heart. These grafts usually come from the patient’s own arteries and veins located in the chest, leg or arm. The goals of this procedure are to relieve symptoms of coronary artery disease, enable the patient to resume a normal lifestyle and to lower the risk of a heart attack or other heart problems and improve patient’s quality of life. |
