Abstract

The negative effect of smoking on human circulatory tissue is well document in many literature due to the highly vascularized nature of the eye .The effect of smoking on the retina and deeper retinal tissues(choroid) is now a topic of great interest besides being a risk factor for ocular vascular disease. Smoking directly causes a decrease in retinal blood flow. This study evaluates the choroidal thickness under the effect of smoking by using Optical coherence Tomography (OCT). The included participants in this study undergone full ophthalmological examination as Best corrected visual acuity measurement using snellen eye chart, Anterior segment examination using slit lamp , intraocular pressure using Goldmann applanation tonometer, posterior segment examination after pupillary dilatation using Slit lamp biomicroscopy with +90 diopter volk lens and Optical coherence Tomography (OCT) to assess choroidal thickness was done using Heidelberg Optical Coherence tomography. Then the selected participants were divided into two groups: group 1: Included 50 participants of healthy smokers. group 2: Included 50 healthy non-smokers participants. The participants were examined at 1st ,8th hr for measurement of choroidal thickness and showed that there significant reduction of choroidal thickness at all the six points of choroid at first hour Compared by the measurements at eighth hour which was statistically significant higher than the first hour and normal cases.
