Abstract

The aim of this study was to Estimate prevalence of stress among students of Benha faculty of medicine, Assess factors related to stress.Assess the different coping methods of stress among students of Benha faculty of medicine.Procedures of the study:1) A survey (cross section study) was conducted in banha faculty of medicine, in the context of time from 1st january to decembre 2013. Students who reported suffering from any psychological disorder or sever chronic medical illness before entering the medical school were excluded. Students were evaluated through questionairs as follow: Questionnaire I: For measurement of socioeconomic status of the students by using the new update of A. El-Gilany scale to measure socioeconomic status in health research in Egypt. Questionnaire II: Stress Level Assessment Questionnaire. Questionnaire III: Adjustment to college scale Furthermore the questionnaire included: presence of social proplems and habits of smoking. Also the medical history of chronic diseases or operations. To detect kind of stressors that students may have The study revealed the following results:- Prevalence of stress among benha university medical students was mild. as (63.8%) of students had mild stress while only (23.6%) had moderate stress.- We found that stressed students whose fathers are highly educated are more than others. Also high levels of stress were present in students who had working mothers and low family income.- The most common sources of stress were, psychological symptoms, social problems, financial problems and medical problems respectively.- The current study found that medical students in final year experienced higher level of stress than students in previous years.- In the category of academic adjustment we found that low family income and smoker students had bad academic adjustment.- We also found that students have high levels of social adjustment to college life, and there was high significance of social adjustment according to sex (p=0.001) females are more socialy adjusted to college life than males.- According to emotional adjustment levels the students were moderately adjusted. There was high statistical significance according to mother education (p=0.004) and family size (p=0.048). Students whose mothers were primary educated and live in small family were less emotionaly adjusted to college life. - In the goal commitment levels the students showed high levels of adjustment, and there was high significance according to age differences (p=0.001) and work of mother (p=0.008). students less than 18 years old and whose mothers are not working had high goal comittment levels.By Linear regression between stress score and father education, mother occupation, income nature and stressors, we found that Stressors were considered the most predicting factor for stress as adjusted R2 was very close to R2.
