Abstract

Smoking is the single greatest avoidable cause of disease and death.. Non- smokers are at risk because of exposure to passive smoke, (Becklake, Ghezzo & Ernst, 2009). passive smoking is the smoke a smoker breathes out and that comes from the tip of burning cigarettes, pipes, and cigars (Melinda, 2014). The immediate effects of passive smoking include eye irritation, headache, cough, sore throat, dizziness and nausea (Royal college of Physicians, 2010). The effects of smoking on eyes and vision may be significant that smoking tobacco or being exposed to tobacco smoke can cause damage to health, but it can also increase the risk for developing a number of eye disorders and diseases, including irritated eyes, smoking can cause chronic redness of eyes. Additionally, passive smoke inhaled by children, can alter the tear film of eyes, exacerbating dry eye syndrome and allergic eye conditions. (National Eye Institute, 2010). The aim of the study was to examine the effect of mother’s awareness intervention about passive smoking on the evidence of complications among children with eye diseases. Quasi experimental design (pre-post test) was used to achieve the aim of study. The study was conducted in outpatient clinics of ophthalmology hospital in Shebin El-Kom City, Menoufia governorate. Purposive sample consisted of 110 mothers and their children from 5-15year.
