Abstract

HBO is a non-invasive therapy. In its clinical applications, the patient breathes 100% while fully enclosed in a speciaLly designed chamber at ambient pressures up to three times normal atmospheric pressure.
The primary effect of administering oxygen
at greater to dissolve
than normal atmospheric pressure is physically significant amounts of
oxygen at much increased the blood plasma. This
partial pressures in facilitates healing
through enhanced macrophage function,
fibroblast proliferation,
and collagen synthesis,
angiogenesis, and epithelization.
In addition HBO therapy improves leukocyte bacterial killing a’t>ility for aerobic microorganisms and directly kills anaerobic microorganisms.
There are two main types of hyperbaric chambers:
1- Monoplace chamber: -
Accommodate one patient and are pressurized with 100% oxygen that the patient breathes directly.
2- Multiplace chambers: -
Accommodate between four and twenty-four patients and can be designed to specification based on anticipated patient load. The systems are pressurized with air and patients breath oxygen through a built-in-breathing system. The most important single consideration (as regard advantage of multiplace over monoplace chamber) is that direct hands-on care may be given to the patient during treatment.
Of the medical treatments carried out in hospitals, HBO is one of the most benign when it
comes to side effects. The most common side
effect is barotrauma to and the most serous toxicity.

The contraindications are relatively few. Absolute contraindications include untreated pneumothorax and combined use of HBO with some agents such as doxorubicin and disulfiram. The most common relative contraindications are upper respiratory tract infection, chronic sinusitis, seizure disorders and high fever.
