Abstract

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors in the female genital tract. Depending on their location, fibroids are divided into submucous, intramural, and subserosal.
Most fibroids are asymptomatic, but they may be associated with a variety of symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure, dyspareunia, and urinary frequency and urgency. Presence of fibroids can reduce the possibility of pregnancy in women attempting conception.
MRI is the preferred method for characterizing pelvic masses than ultrasonography, which is used to evaluate fibroids at baseline and follow-up.
Uterine artery embolization has been used as safe and effective minimally invasive new option for patients with symptomatic fibroid disease. It is indicated after failed medical treatment or in patients who express their desire for uterine preservation or avoidance of further surgery.
UFE leads to an impressive improvement of fibroid-related and associated symptoms and significantly improves women’s health-related quality of life.
UFA has low complication rates with exellent clinical outcomes and high patient satisfaction rates in comparison with non-intervention and surgical techniques.
Imaging- guided thermal ablation therapy such as microwave, cryotherapy, laser and magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) have received much attention as minimally invasive strategies for focal treatment of solid tumors. These treatment modalities using thermal ablation therapy offer alternatives method to traditional surgical approaches as they are more safer, with minimal side effects, and limit postoperative morbidities and mortality.
The complications of thermal ablation therapy are usually of minor degree and needs no treatment with spontaneous resolution.
Radiofrequency thermal ablation is being added to the arsenal of minimally invasive treatments of uterine fibroid.
Radiofrequency thermal ablation provides a safe and effective outpatient treatment option for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids (including those larger than 5 cm) and for women who desire uterine conservation.
