Abstract Administration of sedative drugs is often considered to be a standard part of the routine care of critically ill patients. Patients admitted to the ICU receive sedation for many hours and even days, largely because of their dependence on mechanical ventilation, poor general condition, high treatment and monitoring invasiveness, nursing maneuvers, and many other factors such as isolation, sleep deprivation and communication impairment. Therefore, sedation is essential to the management of critically ill patients. Adequate sedation impedes the reaction to stress, prevents anxiety, increases comfort, and improves tolerance to endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, thus facilitating nursing work. The safe and effective use of sedatives must be an integral part of intensive care practice. The most important aspect of ICU sedation understands of the drugs given to patients and their specific advantages and disadvantages. Each drug is ideal for a specific use. Therefore, management of sedation in the critically ill patient requires knowledge, skills and a thorough understanding of the sedation process, a lack thereof can have catastrophic outcomes. Critical care nurse has a major role in the management of sedation; it is a part of the nurses’ role to manage sedation therapy according to patients’ needs and avoid complications of over and under sedation. One of the obstacles for providing appropriate education to critical care nurses and thereby improving patients’ care is the lack of information regarding the current knowledge and practices of critical care nurses working in ICU. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify factors affecting critical care nurses practices related to sedation administration in the critical care units. This study was conducted in in the General ICU of Damanhour National Institute Hospital, General ICU of Kafer El Dawar Hospital, General ICU of Damanhour Chest Hospital. A convenient sample of sixty CCNs including technical and intern nurses who were involved in providing direct patient care throughout the three different shifts (morning, evening and night) in the previously mentioned units were included in this study. To accomplish the aim of the current study; two tools were used for data collection. Tool one safe use of sedatives observation checklist and tool two Factors Affecting Critical Care Nurses Practices of Sedation Administration Structured Interview Schedule An official letter was directed from the Faculty of Nursing in Alexandria University to hospital administrative authority in order to obtain their acceptance to collect the necessary data from the selected ICUs. Then, the permission was obtained from the hospital administrative authority after providing an explanation of the study aim. Safe Use of Sedatives Observation Checklist (Tool one) was adapted from El-Bakour 2012 to assess critical care nurses’ practices regarding sedative drugs administration . |
