Abstract

Sexual harassment in Egypt has recently received much media attention. However, scientific studies on the topic are still lacking. The study aimed to measure the prevalence and risk factors of exposure to different types of sexual harassment and identify the psychological impact of harassment. Methodology of the study: a cross-sectional study carried on 1940 female university students (972 students in practical faculties and 968 students in theoretical ones), over a period of 7 months, between March 15th to October 30th, 2013. The interview sites included different grades of Menoufia University. The sample size was calculated using Epi Info (2000) program. Pilot study was done on 200 female students out of 2200 (approximately 9% from the total chosen ones), the female participants in the pilot study were excluded. The participants were subjected to a predesigned modified questionnaire using Middle sex or general symptom check list questionnaire (Appendix2) and specially designed questionnaire (Appendix3). The study shows the effectiveness of community-based targeted questionnaires in identifying the sexual harassment. Prevalence of sexual harassment was 65.3% among the total studied number (64.6% in practical faculties and 65.9% among theoretical ones). The prevalence of different types of sexual harassment was for verbal type (76.5%), follow (12.8%), Touch (20.3%) and physical violence (1.1%). A number of risk factors was behind exposure to sexual harassment like wearing tight clothes and wearing hot colors. The effects of sexual harassment were reported as feeling insecurity (56.7%), depression (25%), self-reproach (15%), revenge desire (9.3%) and denial (8.9%). The results showed that most harassment occurs in the public streets (62.8%) and in public transport (33.5%). The results also showed that sexual harassment commonly occurs in the theoretical faculties (17.0%). Negative reactions to sexual harassment, and in particular fear, anger, shame and sadness were detected in the study. We recommend university and government policies to reduce sexual harassment in Egypt society.
