Abstract

Family planning is a behavior that allows individuals and couples to anticipate and attain their desire of number of children and the spacing and timing of their births. It is achieved through the use of contraception methods and treatment of involuntary infertility. A woman’s ability to space and limit her pregnancies has a direct impact on her health and well being as well as on the outcome of each pregnancy.
Family planning is a key investment in reducing the broader costs of health care and reducing risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Accessing family planning can reduce maternal deaths by 40.
There are many different types of contraception which developed over decades. It was depended on female methods then extended to some new methods for male. Contraception include barrier method, hormonal contraception, intrauterine devices (IUDS), behavioral methods and sterilization.
Hormonal may be delivered by injection, orally, placed in the vagina, or implanted under the skin. The most common types of oral contraception include the combined oral contraceptive pill and the progesterone only pill.
Use of contraceptive methods among women in stable marital relations may be influenced by a number of factors which include but not limited to socio-demographic variables such as age, education level and occupation. Age can be associated with the use of contraceptive methods, different age groups have different contraception knowledge and needs for example women in mid-
twenties who are in stable relationship are likely not to use contraceptive methods because it a period to bear the children. However, women with advanced age above forty five are likely to use contraceptives. Furthermore, women with higher education level, are better informed than women with lower education; and therefore likely to use contraceptive methods. In addition, occupation is likely to influence the use of contraceptives, because sometimes job requirement may necessitate delay in conception Further that, religious beliefs may discourage women and their spouses/partners from using contraceptive methods.
