Abstract

This cross sectional observational study was carried out at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Elmahalla general hospital after the approval of the research Ethics Committee, during the period between December 2013 and December 2014. The study group included 85 pregnant women. A written informed consent was obtained from all patients before participation. The method of the study included calculation of the fetal weight using the symphysiofundal height and calculation of fetal weight according to the formula by Buchmann and Tlale.,2009 and ultasonographic estimation of fetal weight by Hadlock II formula and the sex specific formula produced my Melamed et al.,2012. This study showed that sex-specific model was associated with even lowest systematic errors (−1.26% to 0.46%) and was the only model for which the systematic error was not statistically different between male and females fetuses (P>0.05) as there was statically significant difference between male and females fetuses among the other two models (P <0.). The study also showed that the clinical method of estimation of fetal weight is reasonably accurate and can be applied in our clinical practice in absence of ultrasound machines.
