Abstract In the present study, the thyroid function was assessed in 30 Egyptian infertile females with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Non significant changes were observed concerning serum total and free T4, total T3, T3 uptake, free thyroxine index (FTI) and TSH in PCOS group, compared to the control group. As expected, the affected women manifested a significant increase in the serum total testosterone level and elevated LH/FSH ratio (4.8:1). Also, serum DHEA-S04 level was higher than the control group, while serum estradiol level was normal. Thus, it seems that thyroid function tests are of limited clinical value in the diagnosis, prediction and as an appropriate part of the management of polycystic ovarian syndrome. |
