Abstract

The present study was performed to investigate the effect of foot and mouth disease virus on hematological, biochemical, oxidative status and the reproductive performance of adult female water buffaloes. This experiment was carried out on 40 adult female water buffaloes belonging to different localities during an outbreak of FMD in Sharkia governorate, Egypt. These animals were divided into 3 groups as follow:
*Group (1) was ten apparently healthy female water buffaloes and kept as a normal control. Group (2) was fifteen animals in the early stage of FMD (first three days post appearance of clinical signs). These animals were suffering from all signs of FMD (fever, vesicular eruption on mouth, lips, checks, tongue and interdigital space, lameness, off food and profuse salivation).
*Group (3) was fifteen animals in late stage of the disease (one week post appearance of clinical signs). These animals were suffering from all of the above signs except fever. Two blood samples were collected from each animal by puncture of the jugular vein. The first blood samples were taken into di-potassium salt of EDTA tube for hematological examination. The second blood samples were taken without anticoagulant for separation of serum for both biochemical and serological studies.
