Abstract

The electrical sources are required to be more reliable, flexible and continuous in order to provide all loads by electrical power in all times with the required characteristics. Under such circumstances, considerable activities are carried out to formulate and promote power quality of electrical sources. However, the majority of these activities are only placed for normal operation of power systems in regulated and deregulated power systems. On the other hand, there are few researches directed to improve the power quality under contingency operation of power systems. Flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) is a promising solution for improving power quality in electric power systems. FACTS have many advantages such as increasing transmission capability, increasing dynamic and transient stability, providing voltage control, enabling power flow control and compensating reactive power. This thesis investigates the optimal location and setting of FACTS devices in addition to their settings for controlling voltage magnitudes at different buses. This is intended under normal and abnormal operation to minimize active power losses, reactive power losses, improve voltage profile, minimize number of control process and minimize total cost of FACTS devices. Thus, it will be possible to improve some power quality indices in the entire network.
