Abstract

Nosocomial infections are infections acquired during or associated with delivery of care in contrast to infections present or incubating at the time of the care delivery episode. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of competency based infection control guideline on reduction of nosocomial infection in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Setting: This study was conducted at NICU Specialized Pediatric hospital in Benha City. Design: A quasi experimental design was used in this study. Sample:
1) All nurses (30) working at the previously mentioned setting. 2) All neonates (311) admitted in NICU. Tools of data collection: The first tool is structures interview questionnaire sheet, the second tool is observation check list for nurse’s application of infection control precaution and the third tool is surveillance of nosocomial infection at NICU. Results revealed that, there were a significant difference of nurses’ knowledge and practices post implementation of a competency based infection control guideline and surveillance outcome of nosocomial infection in NICU were reduced. In conclusion: Improvement of nurses’ knowledge and practices and reduced nosocomial infection rate. Study recommended that nurses need an in service training programs with supported written updated guideline to improve their knowledge and practices. More ever hospital infection control system should be activated.
