Abstract Breast cancer (BC) is the most common form of cancer among females in developed and developing countries. According to World Health Organization(WHO) report there were about 519,000 women who die from breast cancer annually and more new cases are found, which is estimated to be one millions of women develop breast cancer each year approximately (WHO, 2010). The early detection of breast cancer is the most important and beneficial area of protection techniques and has been positively linked with decrease of mortality and morbidity of the illness (Mele et al, 2005). Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a process whereby women examine their breasts regularly to detect any abnormal swelling or lumps in order to seek prompt medical attention (Parkin, 1994). Preparation to do BSE: Begin while lying in bed, she should place a pillow or folded towel under her left shoulder and her left hand behind her head. Her shoulder should not be raised high enough for her left breast to be center on top of her chest, falling to the center nor toward the armpit; does this arrangement distribute the breast tissue as evenly as possible across the chest wall. If a breast is not properly flattened against the chest, it is difficult to feel a lump particularly in the outer upper quadrant, where tissue is thick and where most malignancies occur (Becker and Choti, 2002). Technique: Palpation, a careful and systematic feeling of both breasts, will give a touch picture of their normal structure and condition. The right hand used to examine the left breast, and vice-versa. |
