Abstract

rom the results of the present study, we concluded the following:
Anemia is a common problem among Egyptian children. IDA is the most common cause of anemia among Egyptian children of low socioeconomic standard.
The high prevalence of anemia reported here suggests that this condition may be an associated causal factor, especially as the length of hospitalization was generally short, and the patient was probably anemic at the time of admission.
Risk factors for anemia and IDA include:
a) Age below 18 months.
b) Exclusive breast feeding till 6 months of age.
c) Delayed onset of weaning after 6 months of age.
d) Less years of maternal and paternal education.
e) Preterm delivery.
f) High order in birth.
